Exorcism in the power of Christ

Luke 4:31-37

And Jesus went down to Capernaum –
a town in Galilee where He
taught the people on the Sabbath day,
and they were dazed by His teaching –
amazed by His Word
of power,
of authority.

And in the synagogue, a man
by an evil spirit
cried out with a terrible cry:
‘Oh, let us alone!
What have You to do with us?
We have nothing in common
with You, Jesus of Nazareth!
But we know Who You are –
the Holy One of God.’

Then Jesus commanded the spirit:
‘Be quiet! You are bound
to come out of him!’

And the demon threw the man down
to the floor but came out of him
without hurting him more!

Perplexed the people
turned to one another and asked:
‘What’s happening?
What’s happening?
What just happened here?
For with power and authority,
He commands hostile spirits,
and they come out and obey.’

After that, many say
word of Jesus traveled
quickly around the country.

Reluctant healing

Going north to Phoenicia, Jesus left Galilee –
going outside Jewish terrain –
going where no one knew Him,
going to a house that kept no secrets.

And a Syro-Phoenician woman found him
and fell at His feet
and begged Him to get rid of
the demon in her daughter,

But oh! They were Gentiles, and Jesus,
who only wanted –

needed –
rest and a quiet meal said:

“I must feed My family first
before feeding yours
like a puppy under the table!”

She knew this was true but snapped,
“Even the dogs get leftover scraps!”

Jesus could tell she had faith,
so He sent the woman home
to find her child healed
and resting well.
